Sonic Terrain, a New Site Dedicated to the Art of Field Recording

What’s in your bag? Photo courtesy Nathan at Sonic Terrain. If you want some hope that good things can happen online, look no further than Designing Sound , a blog/online magazine by Miguel Isaza and Jake Riehle. They’ve built a place where pro legends regularly rub shoulders with newcomers eager to learn more. Now, Miguel has a new site, entitled Sonic Terrain, that promises to do the same for the “art, science, and craft of field recording.” Whereas Designing Sound focused on sound for visual media, Sonic Terrain is really for anyone who wants to take a mic out into the wilds, whether a composer, an amateur, an ecologist – anyone. The first post is already a must-read, taking on three “missions” for packing your gear: Packing a Handheld Recorder Stealth Recording Packing a Microphone Windscreen Co-founder Nathan Moody is our kind of artist, with a background in multitouch design as well as multimedia, sound, and music. His existing blog has adventures with parabolic mics, toy helicopters, and much more – all with copious SoundCloud-hosted sound example: http://www.noisejockey.net/blog/ Nathan can take you into a glorious dawn world of ibises and cows in the Sierra Nevada: Ibises and Cows in Sierra Valley by noisejockey So, go enjoy! http://www.sonic-terrain.com/ Twitter / Facebook (Incidentally, while CDM hosts Designing Sound, we’re otherwise unaffiliated… the template looks like CDM because I installed it as a default choice on our server.)

Cakewalk V-Studio 20

The V-Studio series from Cakewalk/Roland has thus far aimed to provide a complete production environment, but the new VS-20 has a far simpler remit: it's for guitarists who want to get into software recording but crave the simplicity of yesteryear's standalone hardware recorders. The package consists of the VS-20 hardware and PC-only Guitar Tracks 4 software, and it's billed as being 'netbook ready', hence we used a Samsung NC10 netbook for this review. At 30cm wide, the VS-20 hardware is about 5cm wider than your average netbook. It feels good if not exactly rugged, but it'll surely last if you're sensible with it. The I/O ports are on the left and right sides, to facilitate plonking the device right in front of your laptop. "The built-in mics are perfect for capturing fleeting ideas." On the left, you've got a USB port; stereo out on RCA jacks; and 1/4" jacks for dual footswitch, expression pedal (for wah/volume) and headphones. On the other side, you'll find a high-impedance 1/4" input for guitar/bass; stereo line in on 1/4" jacks; and an XLR mic input with phantom power. It's got a pair of built-in stereo mics, too. Guitar Tracks lets you record up to 32 tracks of audio and has two main screens. The Track view is your typical DAW arranger, with features like snap to grid, clip fades, track freeze, etc. Console yourself The other screen, Console view, corresponds to the VS-20's controls. The channel levels can be controlled with the VS-20's faders, using the 'track group' buttons to access them in banks of eight. Tracks can be armed via the Track Select buttons, and there's a transport strip too. You can record volume automation using the VS-20's faders (and manually draw in curves for other parameters, including those of plug-ins)

Round-up: 15 pairs of headphones for musicians

Whether you're a DJ, someone who likes to make music away from their studio or just appreciate listening to good quality audio, a decent pair of headphones is a must. However, your requirements from a set of cans will be dictated by what you're going to use them for. Comfort is obviously a pre-requisite, but you won't want a 'hi-fi' sounding pair if you want to create decent mixes, for example. What you need, then, is a round-up of headphones from some of the best-renowned manufacturers in the market, with reviews that tell you their strengths and weaknesses and discuss their suitability for different musical disciplines. Read on for just such a round-up - we've listed the cans in ascending price order so you can quickly find a pair that suits your needs and budget.
The XX win the 2010 Mercury Prize

Last night the annual Mercury Music Prize was handed out, with South London natives The XX picking up the award for their superb eponymous debut album. The band were bookies favourites for the majority of the time since the shortlist was announced in July. However, fellow nominee Paul Weller's odds improved massively in the few days before the announcement, due to a seemingly bizarre surge in betting over the weekend. While The XX's win may not come as much of a surprise, we at MusicRadar are pleased to see them scoop the title. With its simple-but-effective guitars, neat drum machine work and gorgeous production tone, their album was easily one of our favourites of last year. Check out the clips below to hear a few of our favourite bits of their work to date. The band accepted the award as a trio last night, although at the time of its release the act - who are all alumni of the same South London school as Hot Chip, Burial and Four Tet - were performing as a four piece. Despite having worked with producers such as Diplo in the past, the record was producer and mixed by the band themselves. The award, which comes with a £20,000 prize, has been won in the past by the likes of Portishead, Dizzee Rascal, Klaxons, Roni Size and, err… M People. Other nominees this year included Weller, Wild Beast (whose album we also highly recommend), Oxford indie band Foals, Scottish rockers Biffy Clyro and Manchester band I Am Kloot. The win is also a nice little triumph for Young Turks , the independent label that released The XX's album, and an imprint that certainly deserves a bit of attention for their good work.
Mackie Sponsors Redhook Sausagefest

That's right we said Sausagefest... A one-stop shop for the average beer, meat and music lover. Redhook Beer, Meat-Centric Food Vendors, Live Music, UW vs. Nebraska Jumbo Screen, Meat Raffle, Rock Climbing Wall and Corn Hole Competitions. As a toast to another great summer in the Northwest, this beer fest offers one last chance to kick back, enjoy the weather and a few of your favorite things. On September 18th the lush grounds of Redhook Ale Brewery will be transformed into a vibrant festival that's all about great craft, local music and man's favorite food: meat. Yes. For the thousandth time. There will be girls. THE BEER: There will be 8 different Redhook brews on draught at Sausagefest, a flavor for every palate and every pairing. Choose from favorites such as Redhook ESB, Long Hammer IPA, Redhook Blonde, Copperhook Copper Ale and Blackhook Porter, or get back to the roots with Big Ballard Imperial IPA. Above all make sure to try our new Meathook Ale, specifically brewed for Sausagefest. Meathook is a smoked dark lager brewed with specialty malts that impart a hint of maple bacon. THE MEAT: Here is a sneak peek at what Sausagefest will have to offer: Salumi will be serving up a salami sampler, Uli's Famous Sausage with a sausage sampler, Fletcher's ESB brats will be served at the Forecaster's Booth, and Dante's Inferno Dogs will have a bacon wrapped brat, jalapeno & cheese sausage and more. We will have the best BBQ in Seattle, gourmet cheeses, beef jerky and sticks, maple bacon ice cream and much more. Redhook's Forecasters Pub will be serving larger, meal-sized items: ESB brat, buffalo burgers, portabello mushroom burger, potato salad, baked beans & Caesar salad. THE MUSIC: A line-up of popular local bands endorsed by KEXP will play on the main stage all day. Band line-up: Hey Marseilles The Black Whales Hillstomp The Lights Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside THE COMPETITION: As you enjoy Redhook beer and sample your way through the grounds, you will have the chance to cast your vote for your favorite vendor.
