Google’s Android has been a relatively slow starter for mobile music software, but a gem like Adam Smith’s free Ethereal Dialpad proves it’s a viable option, and the app is an inspiring musical toy, to boot. Perhaps more important than that, behind the scenes, Adam is employing a really beautifully audio engine of his own design with an elegant approach to coding sound. Ethereal Dialpad features a set of basic modules for using touch to produce synthesized sound with real-time effects. The concept isn’t new – Adam says he was inspired by the pitch mapping on KORG’s Kaossilator – but it’s nicely executed, and the software is fun and responsive. I’ve tested it with some non-musician Android owners, and they were simply delighted. And yes, you can plug it into external effects and go absolutely wild – see the video below for one example. Of course, these sorts of applications are relative commonplace on the iPhone, but few and far between on Android. So it seemed the perfect time to ask Adam to share his thoughts on developing for the platform. Along the way, Adam has some great thoughts on live coding and sharing in the development community that go well beyond any one platform. Mobile applications in general have often been self-contained, limited-lifespan creations; the simpler ones are almost like bubblegum – suck out the sugar and move on

Image courtesy KORG, USA. Looking for all the world like it was inspired by the Gakken SX-150 synth , but packed with Korg analog electronics, the monotron has to be one of the biggest surprise announcements from a major vendor in recent memory. The tiny has the filter from the classic KORG MS-10 and MS-20 and is called a “real analog” synth. It’s also likely to be very hackable, though we’ll know more about that soon. I think we’ve found the stocking stuffer of 2010, and it’s only March. Pricing: MSRP US$85 Availability: August 2010 (note: this is official information from KORG USA; for some reason some other dates and prices are floating around) Specs: A ribbon controller for vibrato, glide, and pitch Circuitry: one voltage-controlled oscillator, one voltage-controlled filter, one low-frequency oscillator. Controls: five knobs, one switch. LED blinks with the LFO. Same voltage-controlled filter circuitry as on the legendary KORG MS-10 and MS-20 semi-modulars – now, if we could only convince KORG to give us a monotron Pro with more of the MS in it. Runs on two AAA’s External audio input (updated) for filtering any external input – awesome. (Thanks, arne/styrofoammusic !) Drum sounds were sampled and patterns rebuilt in the Korg Electribe ESX, with additional Linndrum sounds where in the original tracks acoustic drumkits were added. All synth and bass sounds are from my Roland Juno 106 (1984) and Juno 60 (1982) synths, trying to emulate the Prophets and other synths used in the original tracks. Additional fx by Boss SE50. All recreated by ear

Luckily CV is DC so that works out pretty nicely. The voltage ranges and resistance need to be tweaked to give more accurate control, and there are plenty of places for this to go wrong, but this is just a really basic proof of concept.”

The PE 1000 has a number of presets, but the real fun begins when you stray from the path and start tweaking the synth patches in real time. A number of parameters are available, such as Attack, Decay, Sustain, and Waveform mode ; while these may seem fundamental and crude by today’s standards, they are capable of some respectable sound mangling and warpage. This synth just oozes a 70s vibe, and has an organic character that is difficult to emulate in spite of its supposed simplicity.”

YouTube via JeffreyPlaide “Contemplative Ring-Modulated Partials is an original electronic composition primarily composed on the Korg R3 synthesizer, and utilising extensive use of the 8-step arpeggiator and randomising sequencing functions. The work also features extensive use of double ring-modulated waveforms. Double ring-modulated effects produce some rather unexpected groans, warbles, wheezes, rumbles and squawks – due to the sum and difference effect acting twice on the source oscillator waveforms. The main sequence was composed using dual timbres each set to operating with dual triangle waveforms. Each waveform was ring-modulated by the second oscillator, processed with stereo delay, then further ring-modulated using a sinewave in note mode and adjusted until an interesting effect was achieved. The two timbres were each treated in this manner, then fed to the master reverb effect. The sequence was composed at 104 bpm and played using the 8-step arpeggiator set to random mode. Some steps were muted to create variety in the passage. The second sequence was created in the same way as the first but with different transpose settings for the timbres. Different oscillator ring-modulation settings were used for the individual oscillators, and different pitch settings for the second ring-modulation effect. Again an 8-step randomised arpeggiation sequence was called into play. The last sequence was created like the second sequence, but with lower filter cut-off and high-resonance to induce self-oscillation
