Inside New Komplete 7, New Instruments, Effects; Player Could Change Reaktor

When it comes to software sonic goodies, loads of virtualized gear you can add to the digital, computer-based studio, Komplete is one of the deepest boxes out there. Komplete 7, announced today, is the latest edition of Native Instruments’ bundle of virtual studio software. As always, that means a refresh of what’s in the box to recent upgrades of synths like Absynth, FM8, and Massive, plus drum instrument Battery, guitar effects and amp simulation Guitar Rig, and the modular creation powerhouse Reaktor. In addition, though, today’s Komplete 7 announcement brought some new tools to the table, as seen in the image gallery above. (Click on the thumbnails for a closer look.) They include a number of surprise effects announcements, and one less-surprising – but intriguing – synth for the new release of Reaktor from NI’s sonic scientist-in-chief. Reaktor Prism is a new “modal synth” created by NI founder and Reaktor creator Stephan Schmitt. Stephan walked me through Prism when I visited him in Berlin earlier this summer, and I have to say, it’s one of the software releases I’m most excited about – Stephan’s ideas about synthesis are always refreshing and inspiring. It makes a lot of use of the new objects in 5.5. It’s hard to describe, so stay tuned for more on it soon. Reflektor is a “zero-latency” convolution engine for simulating reverbs and other effects. Traktor’s 12 brings some of the effects from Traktor into producer’s hands. That’s good news, because some of Traktor’s far-out and granular-based timbres seem a natural for non-DJs. Rammfire is a new amp emulation developed with Richard Z. Kruspe of Rammstein

Jim Reekes, The Man Behind Mac Sound

OMT in San Francisco #3: ‘Let it beep’ from One More Thing on Vimeo . The legend of the early sounds of the Mac remains, apparently, an alluring one. Here, Jim Reekes talks to a Dutch documentary crew (though in English) about his thought process in designing sounds for the Mac, including the famous Mac startup sound. If you haven’t heard the story, it’s a great tale. But there’s more to why Jim Reekes matters.

OSC, Kyma, iPad, and Beyond: Your Networked Musical Future

Connecting stuff is one of the things musicians naturally do with gear. So, there’s really no reason that musical gear shouldn’t network as easily as Web servers. And yet a basic protocol, built largely on existing standards, meets with responses like this: “We’ll support OSC when there’s hardware out there.” “Name one piece of hardware that supports OSC other than the Lemur.” OSC has some major advantages as a network protocol, as a way of connecting software with software, software with hardware, and yes, even hardware with hardware. It doesn’t have to “compete” with MIDI – you can even send MIDI message data over OSC, thus taking advantage of features OSC has that MIDI doesn’t (like time stamps, which your tools could use to calculate latency even if you don’t use them directly). Yet I’ve been listening to this argument for years now. “Any computer” counts as an OSC device, but even when tens of millions of iPhones and iPod touch devices hit the market (not to mention other mobiles), software developers were still pointing to a (completely absurd) “lack of hardware.” How tens of millions of gadgets can count as “nothing,” I don’t know, but maybe it’s because a lot of them were phones, not music devices. Well, here’s a combination that ought to get someone’s attention. With the iPad about to launch next month – likely to be followed by more multitouch devices running Android, Linux, and Windows – we’re not just talking phones any more. And the folks at Symbolic Sound, makers of the insanely-powerful sound generation Kyma environment, are adding a proper OSC implementation. Even if you have no interest in the (wonderful) Kyma, now available in more-affordable Paca(rana) devices, this is one to watch. What you can do: Use OSC directly , via a direct connection and even onboard Ethernet on the Paca(rana). That opens up the use of devices like Lemur, and, yes, iPad

Creating swing feel on the Roland MC-4b

YouTube via darenager “A demonstation of how to create swing on the Roland MC-4, you could also apply the same technique to the MC-202, MC-8 or other similar device, if this video proves popular I may do some more tutorials. This is not a musical performance just a demonstration of technique so I have kept it to a simple 16 step sequence, of course you can use any length of sequence depending how patient you are. First set the timebase to 48,12,6, this gives you 48ppqn so each 16th note will last for 12clocks, and enter your notes as normal. in the first part of the clip I am playing the sequence straight – so all step lengths set to 12. Next we enter step time mode (shift 2) and change each alternate step to an offset of 12 but so that each 2 adjacent steps add up to 24, for example 14 and 10 as in the second example, or 13 and 11 (third example), higher difference = heavier swing feel. You can have the smaller number first or second depending on whether you want a rushed or lazy feel, also you can experiment with more complex timings for different types of groove, such as a pattern of 4 – 14,10,13,11 or whatever, just make sure that your total measure length is equal to 192 so that the sequence cycles correctly when synced. That’s pretty much it, hope you find it useful and thanks for watching.”

Rare Vintage Casio PT-7 Synthesizer Keyboard W BOX

via this auction and this auction “Casio PT-7 (instrument with tiny polyphonic touch sensor keypad & analogue rhythm) This is clearly one of the most bizarre and innovative instruments created by Casio, because this tiny thing has a detachable keyboard with 29 soft touch foil keys, and this is not just a monophonic toy tablehooter but a real 8 note(!) polyphonic instrument with analogue rhythm and a small but high quality loudspeaker that makes a very respectable organ sound. This strange Casio invention permits special play techniques with very rapid glissandos and was one of the forgotten milestones in the struggle of overcoming the clumsy piano key relic on electronic consumer instruments. main features: * 29 tiny soft touch foil keys on a detachable slim line keyboard with short cable * built-in astonishing reasonable sounding small speaker * 8 notes polyphony * separate knobs for main and rhythm volume * tempo knob * 6 preset rhythms {waltz, samba, swing, slow rock, pops, rock} selected by a slide switch * 8 OBS preset sounds {piano, elec. piano, organ, pipe organ harp, accordion, clarinet, violin} selected by a 4-step slider + switch * main voice CPU “HD44140, 3G 13″ (56 pin SMD) with timbres based on multipulse squarewave tones with different digital envelopes, those are differently low pass filtered through capacitors

Tristan Perich – Interval Studies (Part 1)

Tristan Perich – Interval Studies (Part 1) from Tristan Perich on Vimeo . “Tristan Perich: Interval Studies audio art exhibition in Copenhagen closing this Sunday Mikrogalleriet’s solo exhibition for New York-based composer and artist Tristan Perich ends this Sunday in Copenhagen. His new body of work, Interval Studies, is a formal look at musical intervals as a dense continuum of microtonal pitch, expressed en masse as discrete 1-bit frequencies distributed across hundreds of individual speakers. Each speaker, emitting a single, primitive 1-bit tone, becomes a microscopic voice in the total cluster, substituting individual pitch for larger sonic masses. Evenfall Mini Modular

via this auction “This auction is for the ultra rare Evenfall Mini Modular! Designed as a collaboration between Grant Richter (designer of the famous Wiard 300 series modular) and Chris McDonald, the Evenfall sounds as amazing as it’s heritage would imply. This one is “factory-built” and not one of the few kit versions sold. The condition is very, very good / near-mint. Many functions are packed into this slender 3U synthesizer. 2x VCO, 2x VCA, 2x LFO, 2x envelopes, 2x mults, lag processor, sample and hold, waveshaper, MIDI to CV converter and, of course, a fantastic filter. Like with the Arp 2600 and Cwejman S1, the synthesizer has sensible normalized routings, interruptable via patch cables. Very convenient for workflow but still as flexible as a proper modular. It comes with eight patch cables and the original Wiard style PSU.”
