More Free Synthesis Goodness: QuteCsound Screencast, Csound with Processing

For all the wonderful tools and toys for sound out there, sometimes you want to find the couple of tools that, like a great kitchen knife, can accomplish the majority of what you actually need. (And as with the kitchen knife, while it may not eliminate your desire for all those other gadgets, it’s worth some sharpening.) So it is with something like Csound, the tested-and-tried, free synthesis tool. Jim Aikin looked at the QuteCsound front end recently, which puts the power of Csound in a more friendly work environment. Via Synthtopia , there’s also now a screencast series that covers using QuteCsound, starting with digging into presets. (Yes, that’s right – presets. And here you thought you were going to have to do a lot of coding to have any fun.) I find two YouTube users uploading how-to screencasts: http://www.youtube.com/user/mantaraya36 (author of the series starting at top) http://www.youtube.com/user/ketchupok (start with “Where to start?” Also worth following is Jacob Joaquin’s excellent Csound Blog, hosted on Noisepages: http://csoundblog.com/ and on Twitter, follow @TheCsoundBlog It’s very early in development (“alpha”), but Jacob is already doing amazing things integrating Processing, the non-coder-friendly, artist sketchbook-style coding language, with Csound, in a new library called Csoundo . That’s an ideal combination, because you can do logic and visuals quickly in Processing, then turn to Csound for audio. This is where I imagine work in two of Csound’s most popular rivals – the object-oriented, OSC-savvy SuperCollider and visual patching, Max-descendent Pure Data – may lead, as well. Check out Jacob’s roadmap for more . By the way, I hear some folks are having some trouble building QuteCsound on Ubuntu, so I’ll see what the issue is, and write up some instructions and send them over to Jacob for his blog. It’s a good time for Csound and free synthesis in general. With this work accelerating, I think doing a series of absolute-beginner tutorials will be very doable soon. And there’s no reason you can’t integrate a tool like this with your favorite host of choice, from Ableton to Cubase.

REVIEW: Music Production with Pro Tools Vol 1: Pop

A little while ago I visited the Groove 3 website to watch a DVD I had heard of but for some strange reason ended up watching Music Production with Pro Tools Vol 1: Pop instead. Music Production with Pro Tools Vol 1: Pop, from now on called Pop (because I’m to lazy to write the full title and because you probably get tired of reading it) is another DVD from every Protoolers favorite video creator Kenny Gioia. Kenny is, as I hope you know, a kickass tutor and a true Pro Tools ninja. With what my Swedish ears figure to be a New York accent, Kenny runs you through a modern pop production. One song, pretty much from start to finish. These kind of videos are actually my favorite kind of tutorials. Sure, sometimes a Pro Tools how-to can be a good watch, but seeing a great producer/mixer run through his/her techniques is usually more inspiring to me. I think it’s important to say that you won’t find a lot of of mixing in this DVD. While the track sounds good at the end of the DVD, the focus is really on production . You’ll notice subtle little things like backwards sound and what not that Kenny uses to raise his productions. There’s really a lot more to a modern pop production than one might think. If you want mixing, go somewhere else

I’m currently experimenting a little with various stereo microphone techniques and stumbled across these two videos that I thought some might find interesting. Episode 5 – Stereo microphone techniques (Mid Side) Mid-Side Microphone Technique. This is longer, more educational in a slightly disturbing way.

$9 turns your iPad into a touch screen for your Mac

As shown by Eric Persing of Spectrasonics. Damn, I think this is rather wicked. The response is slow but it could serve as a wicked remote control for any DAW. Today I’m working in Ableton Live, launching clips from an iPad would be awesome to say the least. The app is called Air Display.

Video Review: Franz Gets His Tenori-On iPad

Reader Franz (Franz Keller, VJFranzK) has been blissfully happy with a Tenori-On-inspired application for Apple’s iPad, and he’s committed his enthusiasm to video. I love his presentation style, a bit like a cheery authoritative voice from a vintage newsreel. From his description: Aurora by 4Pockets for iPhone, iPad etc. The newest amazing synth program to enter the iScene! 14 sparkling tracks of improvisational music briliance… a full on Tenori type experience for the great price of $10! There appear to be some tradeoffs here in the transition to the iPad. One of the strong features of using the Tenori-On was the tactile feel of those buttons against your fingertips; the feedback and precision are lost here. It’s also nice to have MIDI connectors for controlling other, often (ahem) better-sounding equipment to the Tenori-On.

Recording Nirvana

Are you into Nirvana? I can’t help it but I think they made two pretty damn decent records (In Utero, Nevermind) that also sounds pretty damn good production wise – garage, but covered in chrome. Here are three videos I watched today with Butch Vig talking about recording three of their songs. Polly. In bloom. Something in the way

REVIEW: Studio secrets with Krish Sharma

Krish Sharma is a man with some impressive credentials (Rolling Stones anyone?) and a good video personality. Should make his video “Studio secrets with Krish Sharma” a pretty good one…? Krish is not boring or hard to listen to at all, crucial for any DVD, and he explains his techniques in a good way. The title, however, I find somewhat misleading. I don’t really think you’re being let into any secrets in this video, instead you’ll learn some fundamentals.

Groove 3 also keeps bugging me about iPad compatibility, probably mocking me because it isn’t available in Sweden yet. More about Superior Drummer Explained

New releases and a sale from Groove 3

Groove 3 is running a rather bad ass sale right now, cutting their online prices with 50% until the end of the month. They’ve also released two new videos that should be of interest to Pro Tools users. First out is Kenny Gioia’s Pro Tools Tips & Tricks – Vol 4 . The second is from our buddy at Air Users Blog, Russ Hughes Structure Explained .
